CURRENT PROGRAM AND PROJECTS
The Dago Dala Hera
Orphanage is currently enjoying the benefits of the following
projects:
1. DAYCARE FEEDING PROGRAM
(initiated in 2005) The orphanage is currently functioning as a
daycare feeding program for primary school children during school days.
This program began in 2005 and feeds 26 to 40 orphans, 2 meals a day for
the 39 weeks the children attend school. The cost varies between 3,000 to
4,600 Kenyan Shillings (KSH) per week, depending on how many children are
in care, as well as the fluctuation in the costs of food. The woman within
the community volunteer their time to prepare these meals.
Sample budget to feed 40 orphans for one week, based on figures
as of July 2007:
Maize (corn)
flour
800 Rice
250 Millet
300 Beans
250 Sugar
500 Cooking
Fat
450 Meat
900 Daggar (small
herring)
200 Sukuma Wiki (cooked
kale)
200 Cabbage
150 Tomatoes
200 Onions
100 Transport
Fees
100 Salt, spices, matches,

2. LAND LEASE
PROJECT (initiated August 2007) Funding has been provided for a
2 year, one acre agricultural land lease. Further funding has been
provided to cover the cost of growing maize and other vegetables that will
be used to supply food to the feeding program for 1 year (2 growing
seasons).
Budget as of August 2007: One acre land lease
for 2
years
8,000 Cost per season for agricultural production: Tilling and
harrowing the
land
5,000 Fertilizers
8,600 Seeds
1,500 Total (per
season):
15,100
Seeding, weeding, harvesting and other necessary labor
will be the joint effort of volunteers and the children that benefit from
the orphanage feeding program.
*HOW YOU CAN HELP: Funding
for the additional two seasons agricultural production costs are needed
at Kshs 15,100 per season. Further
funding is required to continue this project beyond the two
years*.
3. RAIN WATER
CATCHMENTS PROJECT (initiated August 2007) Funding was
provided to do a partial water catchment and storage system. Gutters
(eaves troughs) were installed on half of the orphanage building as well
as a 4000 litre tank to catch and store the rain water.
Budget
for a partial system as of July 2007: 6 foot gutters: 25 at 250 ksh
each
6,250 30 holders (clamps): 30 at 40 ksh
each
1,200 13 foot down
pipe
360 7 bags of cement for the tank
platform
5,670 Transport tank and materials to
Dago
4,000 Labor of 1 carpenter to
install
2,000 4000 litre water
tank
26,000 Total:
45,480
This project as it stands will provide sufficient water
supply to sustain the current demand. Our hope is to complete this project
when funding becomes available and demand dictates.
HOW YOU CAN
HELP: A similar amount of funding would be needed to complete the
installation of gutters to the remaining half of the building with an
additional tank to allow for a larger volume of water catchment and
storage. |
